Subtraction

Subtraction is removing some objects from a group. The meaning of 5-3=2 is "Three objects are taken away from a group of five objects and two objects remain".

This is the very beginning of understanding how subtraction works. Let's look at this set:
5 triangles
Count how many triangles
are in this set...  There are 5!
Now, take two triangles away...
5 triangles with 2 being taken out
3 triangles left the 2 triangles that were taken out

Count how many triangles are left
in the set...
There are 3 left!
So, 5-2=3
Here's another one: Look at this set:

9 circles

Count how many circles
are in this set...  There are 9!
Now, take five circles away...

9 circles with 5 being taken out

4 circles are left the 5 circles that were taken out

Count how many circles are left
in the set...
There are 4 left!

So, 9-5=4
